Unbalanced equations.

Updated: Mar 31, 2024

There have been some unbalanced math equations being thrown around that is making this former math teacher crazy. I mean…I knew things were bad, but the fact that we can’t multiply- geez!

For example, I’m seeing this equation a lot:

250,000,000(Y) = 250,000(Z).

This equation is used by “human rights” activists. This is used by people showing the evil on “both sides.” This equation suggests that the 250 million radicalized Muslims are equivalent to 250 thousand Jewish settlers (who are always thrown into any debate). That each country is “radicalized” and the hate from the Muslim world is justified, because of the Jewish settlers. And while I’m not an expert on the settlers nor radicalized Islam (but learning) it does not take a data scientist to recognize that these two sides are not the same.

250,000,000(Y) = 250,000(Z)

Under no circumstances is this equation balanced.

First, the sheer numbers in these equations show a significant disparity in size. It’s important to note that the number of radicalized Muslims in this equation is very conservative. Studies asking Muslims if they support sharia law point to more than 800 million Muslims, which is more than half of the Muslim population worldwide. However, for this arguments sake, lets go with the conservative “mere” 250 million. But, I hope, we can all agree that 250,000,000 > 250,000.

However, as the laws of mathematics state, this equation can still be equivalent due to its other variables, so let’s look at Y versus Z.

Y = Islamic jihadists. This group believes in the use of violence in the name of Allah and advocates for the eradication of Jews and all non-Muslims. They hold significant power and resources in various Arab states. They also are rich, with multiple billionaires who espouse these views. They hold government positions and can speak hate on world stages. They are also known for violence against their own citizens for civil crimes (like being gay).

Z = Israeli settlers. This group represents a small and contested faction of Israelis seeking to expand territory in disputed areas. They are not wealthy, but poorly resourced groups. They are not the majority in Israel nor supported by the masses. In fact, many settlers have faced legal action, with hundreds of trials and some imprisonments for violence. They do not have calls of the eradication of any race, religion or people.

The suggestion that the danger or harm of Israeli settlers and jihadists is equivalent is delusional, but yet this argument is made by college students to justify their calls of genocide of Jews on college campuses.

So listen up students.

Your equations don’t quite add up.

Think.

Just stop and think or at least break out a calculator.
