Dear Abigail,
Do people ever call you Abby? Because my name is Abby. Maybe we share this in common:)
I’m so happy I get to send you this letter. I wrote it weeks ago, in hopes that you were alive and coming home. I wrote to it to be able to send it. Today I get to do just that.
As I have one message to you.
Dear Abigail,
You are special
You have been chosen. I mean this in a “you can handle it way.” I’ve sadly learned, that certain humans are given harder lots.
In life there are .0001% probability outliers that could happen. The people who get chosen to experience them are different than others. I’ll give one example that I can personally attest to. Children who get rare pediatric deadly cancers with no cure. Very few children get them. But I’ve met them. They are not normal children. Different from the rest. And I know a whole lot of children.
So I welcome you to this club of the outliers. Many like you have had tragedy undreamed of by even horror films. Not one person in the world can understand each one of your statistical horrors, not even each other.
However, not any of you ever feel lonely.
Because there is another secret about these chosen ones…and it’s pure science. For every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction. There is no darkness without light.
And light you will experience. More than you can even imagine.
You will experience some really powerful statistically impossible GOOD things too. You will experience love that not many will know. It will feel stronger than your peers will ever experience. You will try and explain it to them, but they will never be able to even understand what you get the honor to feel. But it won’t be just love that will differentiate your human experience from others. You will also have perspective on life that brings creativity and awakes a genius.
And you will walk with a confidence like no other as you NEVER never walk alone.
While you have lost family in a way that no child should be subjected to, you have gained a nation. You have become a daughter to all of us, the Jewish people, An army stands behind you and a village of mothers beside you. When you fall, hundreds of arms will reach out to catch you.
And know this- You will be a symbol of resilience one day. I know that may feel ridiculous right now (at age 4) to say, but you will write books about your rise to strength and later memoirs about the various leadership positions you will hold to change the world for the better.
So welcome home Abigail and let the light of the world begin to fill the darkness of the past week.
And happy Birthday!
Abby
